Growing up, our household was always full of music making.
Yet, my attention always took me to the barn or my body kept me moving in dance, so I never put in the effort to learn the language of music or get to know a particular instrument.
Drums, Keyboard, Guitar, oh my!
When I expressed interest in making music, my family instantly began offering up instruments.
First, was the hand drum – this I was most familiar with playing in my youth and was something I could instantly drop into to make a rhythm.
Then, a serious of shakers and percussion instruments. These are so fantastic for just clearing up the energy of a room, that I now use them all the time for a little “soundtrack to life.”
Next, I was gifted a keyboard. This got me to actually take my first lessons, beginning the long journey toward musical fluency. I also began to practice my voice, learning where Middle C felt in my body and how to harmonize my own humming.
Now, I’m building a new layer if this creativity cross-training that I see learning music as in my ongoing art skill development: I’m picking up the guitar. Luckily, we already had one I could use, so I tuned it up and started to build a routine rhythm to cultivate music making as a daily activity.
To get me started, I’m building a foundation with the teachings from JustinGuitar.com as well as being incredibly inspired by the Guitar World series called Steve Vai Method.
My goal of all this music making fun? To become able to express myself in a new art form, translating feelings into something that feels good and brings me inner harmony.
Here’s to dancing to the rhythm of our own inner beat.
